The 2017 BET Awards aired this weekend. Hosted by comedian Leslie Jones, it was a night of many awards, performances, and surprises. A lot of Black star power was present in the building. And anytime you get that many talented people together, it has to be a good time.
Bruno Mars opened things up with a performance consisted of his song “Perm”. Other performers included SZA, Gucci Mane, Mary J. Blige, Big Sean, French Montana, Maxwell, Migos, Future, and much more. However, one of the stand-out performances of the night was Tamar Braxton who performed her latest single “My Man”. Out of everyone, she was the most energetic and dramatic. A lot of people saw Tamar’s antics and assumed that she was lip syncing. However, they forget that she’s always been the type of performer who can stay on her note. Even while twerking like she’s in Future’s music video.
The newly reunified Xscape took the stage and sung a few of their hits, which is what people have been waiting for. The reunion that received the most attention was New Edition. Their successful biopic has renewed interest in the group. There was 3x as much New Edition to enjoy on that stage. Performances were given by the child and adult cast of the biopic. The original group took the stage to show everyone how it’s done.
BET honored New Edition with the Lifetime Achievement Award. And Chance The Rapper accepted the BET Humanitarian Award for his contributions to the Chicago Public School System. In all, it was a night of highs, lows, hair flips, interesting performance, and a butt-load of new social media memes.
