The fashion world is steadily showing that style and beauty has no particular age limit. With that being said, it’s not every day, you see a 63-year old woman wearing a chic asymmetrical bob (and sometimes even a Mohawk) as she sashays into the office with her Moschino trousers or if she decides to wear a leather dress, with a bustier for dinner. Well, hear ye hear ye, say hello to Lyn Slater – The Accidental Icon.
From 9 to 5, Lyn Slater is a professor at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Service, and after hours, she is a fashion blogger and social media influencer. Lyn has always understood that clothing could help express aspirations and that age should not be a variable when it comes to dressing, so it’s not a shocker that she “accidentally” got into fashion.
Lyn became the Accidental Icon, literally, by accident. It was New York Fashion week and she was outside Lincoln Center wearing a Yohji Yamamoto suit and carrying a Chanel bag as she waited to meet a friend for lunch. Immediately, the flashing lights of the paparazzi surrounded her with their cameras and journalists begin to ask her questions and then had an epiphany.
The blog – Accidental Icon- was started because Lyn was having trouble finding a fashion blog or magazine that offered an urban, modern, intellectual aesthetic but also spoke to women who live “interesting but ordinary lives” in various cities. She was seeking out women who are not famous or celebrities but are smart, creative, fashion forward, fit, thoughtful, engaged, related and most importantly, comfortable with who they are.
The Accidental Icon is all about street style, emerging designers, and a compilation of weekend fashion bibliographies to keep readers up to date on the latest happenings and trends in the fashion industry. Lyn Slater is proving that age “ain’t nothing” but a number. Check out her impeccable taste and fashion forward styling at www.accidentalicon.com
