With her docuseries titled Mariah’s World premiering on E!, and a new guest role on a Fox hit series, Mariah Carey is definitely going to make this fall a fabulous season to remember. The vocal diva will bring the drama to Wednesday night’s no. 1 ranked show Empire.
Last year, the show’s creator Lee Daniels hinted that MC would be joining the music drama, but Fox officially confirmed Monday that she will definitely be a part of season 3 playing the role of Kitty, “a mega superstar who comes to Empire to collaborate with Jamal Lyon (Jussie Smollet) on an explosive new song,” according to a press release from Fox.
While speaking to members of the press at the 2016 Television Critic Association summer press tour, Taraji P. Henson (Cookie Lyons) says: “She [Mariah] was great. She’s fabulous, she’s beautiful to look at,” Henson said. “…What Mariah brings to the music industry, she brought to the show. I’m grateful she spent time with us.
Hmm… If we’re lucky, we’ll get some shady banter between the two divas.
Empire has made it a habit of pulling in notable names in music for guest starring roles, but in its second season, the star power seemed a bit overwhelming to its loyal viewers. Even the shows co-creator shared the same sentiments as fan. In an interview he suggests they went a little overboard with the guest roles.
“I do think we’ve had too many guest stars,” he told Deadline. “I think, maybe because … now we can get anyone we want, we were too guest-star heavy for a while.”
According to Variety, MiMi will join previously announced guest stars Taye Diggs, Sierra McClain, French Montana and Birdman. Let’s just hope these guest roles are necessary to the storyline.
Season three of Empire is met with big expectations, after ending with some edgy cliffhangers: Anika and Rhonda fighting on the edge of the balcony.
The third season of Empire premieres Sept. 21, while Mariah’s World premiers Dec. 4.
