For most people of color living in the United States racism, be it overt or subvert, is a problem to be dealt with on a day to day basis. In just the last couple of years, issues of racial violence via police brutality, white privilege, and a very partial judicial system have left many wondering if racism is regressing to the days of the sixties! Which is why it is so shocking when celebrities like A$AP Rocky and Bow Wow claim it has nothing to do with them. Now it appears everyone’s favorite Dabber, and quarterback, Cam Newton is on that same page!
Recently Cam snagged the latest cover of GQ Magazine, not only rocking high fashion brands like Calvin Klein, Versace, Burberry, Michael Kors, and Mike Kaufman; but additionally stated America is beyond racism. Read an excerpt of his interview below:

“I don’t want this to be about race, because it’s not. It’s not. Like, we’re beyond that. As a nation.”
GQ: You really think so?
“Yeah. I mean, you bring it to people’s attention. But after that, that’s it.”
“I’ll let you be the judge. I don’t look at it like that,” he told GQ. “I look at it like some people have certain beliefs, and I have my own belief, and we can agree to disagree on certain things. But this is what makes sports so amazing, that we can start a discussion around a table, in the newspaper, in the magazines, that will get people’s attention. And that’s what sports does.”
We are not sure what kind of America Cam is living in, but it must be nice. Perhaps these celebrities and athletes do not experience racism in the way the masses do via job discrimination, medical care, housing, ad infinitum. Their money may make for a soft cushion. The last time we checked there are still hate groups, Donald Trump, and racial profiling! What do you think about Cam’s comments? Are they irresponsible or dead on? Comment below.
