Apple pie, America’s most iconic desert. Everyone loves apple pie. I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t love it. Not to mention, it happens to be one of my most favorite deserts. Not too long ago I found myself in Grand Rapids, Michigan for work. It was there that I was introduced to what I consider the best apple pie that I have ever tasted in my life.
Michigan is a beautiful state with its beaches, coasts, and of course Lake Michigan. If you ever find yourself in Grand Rapids you should definitely make a 45 minute drive to Saugatuck, Michigan. They have this beautiful park called Mount Baldhead Park. There you can take 300 steps to the top of Mount Baldhead and see pretty much all of Grand Rapids. You can also take a trail down to the beach and get right on to the coast of Lake Michigan.
After my descend down the 300 steps I got hungry; so I decided to Yelp food choices in the area near me. On Yelp, I stumbled on one of Michigan’s best kept secrets Crane’s Pie Pantry. Crane’s Pie Pantry is located on Crane Orchards. Yes, I said an orchard. You can already just imagine how fresh every ingredient is going to be. And honestly, out of all the places I have ever eaten I can’t remember the last time that I had food so fresh. The restaurant looks like an old farmhouse, and the food that is served replicates just that. I ended up getting a bowl of chili accompanied by freshly baked bread and their homemade apple butter. I also had a glass of freshly made apple cider in a cute little mason jar to wash it all down. It was nothing short of amazing.
However the real star of the show was the Apple Pie a la mode. Because all of the ingredients to make this pie come straight from the orchard; it makes it even more special. I promise you will never be able to eat another store bought apple pie after tasting just a piece of this pie. The crust was so buttery and flaky. Coupled with the apples in the pie which had their own natural flavor and sweetening. NO ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS! I just couldn’t get over how just one bite tasted so natural. Seriously, it was love at first bite. So much that I considered buying some frozen pies and taking them home with me for Thanksgiving Dinner.
And that’s just it! If you can’t make it to Saugatuck to try this delicious pie, Crane’s ships nationwide! That’s right you can order your pies here. Perfect for the holiday season if you don’t feel like baking. Although, if you ever find yourself in Michigan you should definitely make your way to Crane’s Pie Pantry and the orchard!
