1. Tell us what this book is about?
“Love Lost” is book one of the Love’s Improbable Possibility series (L.I.P.). L.I.P. is a story of a young woman’s journey to regain her ability to trust and love herself and others. Rayna Brimm, the heroine, is a young woman from an inner-city in New Jersey who lost her mother to drug addiction, was abandoned by her father, and lost her brother to the penal system from a murder charge that stemmed from Rayna’s relationship with her first love. Within a year’s time, Rayna experienced loss and betrayal from all those essential relationships that people need to grow and flourish in life.
Rayna slowly repairs her life and goes away to school to obtain a degree and then finds her way to Los Angeles, California. She immediately continues her studies and becomes a Physical Therapist. She reinvents herself, all along the way engaging in relationships with men who, in one way or another, betrays her trust. All of these events morphs Rayna into a frigid being and she believes she can get through life depending on no one but herself and her best friend from undergrad.
The hero, Azmir Jacobs, is a successful businessman who has a complicated life. He’s a shrewd, corporate tycoon by day, but at night he’s at the helm of a multi-million dollar drug organization. Coincidentally, when he crosses paths with Rayna, he’s making his exit from the drug world. Azmir is thriving in the corporate arena that has made him a multi-millionaire legally. And of course, he’s keeping his illegal trades away from Rayna.
The heart of the series is witnessing Azmir trying to peel back the debris of Rayna’s inability to trust and allow him to love her in a way he feels she needs to be and deserves to be. He initially tries to shower her with lavish gifts and trips, but eventually realizes that Rayna’s heart cannot be bought; it has to be captured through patience, nurturing and honesty. But how successful can Azmir be at honesty when he’s keeping the biggest secret of them all – his life as a (former) drug king-pen?
2. Why did you choose to write this book?
My reasons for writing this story have evolved since the moment I sat down and typed the first words on my desktop right out of undergrad. Initially, I was bursting at the seams, wanting to write my first romance novel. In time, as I evolved as a woman, so did my taste in story-telling. I am now interested in writing love stories about complicated individuals. I want to introduce real problems and flaws into romance. I enjoy presenting true fallible creatures and demonstrating how they, too, can experience love. I’m sure many people – men and woman – can relate to Rayna’s setbacks.
3. Tell us why your writing is unique?
I’d like to think my writing illustrates personal and spiritual redemption. People come with baggage and flaws, but they’re still deserving of love and can provide it to others. I also can’t wait to add to the roster of African American authors who are not thrown into the urban genre group. I think urban novels are great, but not all African American authors write urban tales. The L.I.P. series begins in an urban setting. It even maintains a few urban characters throughout; however, it is not an urban tale. I hope to demonstrate that to each reader. I also hope they walk away with a message of hope and inspiration; hope that they can achieve true love and be inspired to give it a try – be it on a romantic level or agape. We all need it.
4. What can we look forward from you?
Well, the L.I.P. series is pretty much completed on my workstation; just filling in a few holes in the subsequent books. We plan to roll them out approximately one month apart. Once they’ve all been released, I can’t wait to sync my teeth back into “Love’s Inconvenient Truth”, another romance novel with mortal characters that have been disrupting my sleep. Hopefully, that will be released at the top of 2014.
I love to write. It allows me to escape into others’ worlds and live life vicariously through them, helping to translate their madness. You can expect more intimate connections, more drama, more unique perspectives and – more love!
