Being Mary Jane begins with Neicey meeting with her son’s father, Kevin. He tries to catch up with her after being gone for two years and offers to help her get in shape. She tells him he does not have to be with her in order to see their son. He immediately changes his tune. At SNC, Kara watches a viewer group about Mary Jane’s (MJ) show and none of them seem satisified with hit. Her boss praises her for improving Bradley’s show but hints that MJ’s show may be in danger if she does not attract more Hispanic viewers. He also tells Cara the information she is seeing is confidential.
MJ interrupts Cara as she flirts with her new guy friend just to meet him. She comes home to find Niecey having sex with Kevin in her bed! She gives herself another fertility shot. Niecey immediately begins to apologize and MJ surprisingly tells her she will not put her out. That night, she talks with her about her self-worth and not revolving her life around a man. Niecey angrily admonishes her for her excessive drinking and hidiing liquor bottles around her home. MJ reminds her of her shortcomings and bleak state. Niecey storms out and calls her grandfather to pick her up. When he arrives, aunt and niece face off again. He admonishes them for their behavior and wonders what has happened to his family. MJ refuses to let him leave believing she has a drinking problem and explains she was respecting Niecey’s children by hiding her liquor. Niecey return to his grandparents’ home. MJ meets with Sheldon DeWitt who wants to use her show as a platform to reach women, but she insists on an exclusive interview with him in return and refuses to be used.
MJ shows Sheldon around SNC while flirting with him. MJ gets Cara to give her, her latest shot and reminds her of her date. She convinces her to go and gives her a condom just in case. Cara arrives at the restaurant forty-five minutes late and immediately the date sours. The kitchen is about to close and her date is salty about her being so late. She ends things with him not wanting more guilt in her life. MJ meets with Bradley for a drink and they dish about Sheldon.
