The BET Awards was nothing short of EXPLOSIVE with all-star celebs and performances, makeups from breakups, reunions, and even an appearance from an icon that’s been out of the limelight for the past seven years! Let’s talk about some of the biggest performances!
The BET awards started off with a bang as Kendrick Lamar performed his latest single, “Alright” from his second album, To Pimp a Butterfly. With the American flag waving in the background K. Dot had the entire crowd on their feet as he touched on social issues throughout the song. Kendrick also won the BET award for best hip hop artist.
Hosted by ‘Black-ish’s’ stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, the pair had the audience laughing all night with their antics and parodies from current songs like Silento’s whip to Fetty Wap’s Trap Queen. I must say they are a great pair and should host the awards again.
Chris Brown and Tyga performed “Ayo” from their joint album, Fan of a Fan, and even brought out Omarion to perform his radio smash, “Posed to Be”.
Nicki Minaj joined her boo on stage to perform their new single, “All Eyes on You” from Meek’s upcoming album, Dreams Money Can Buy, which is scheduled to drop on tomorrow. The two looked so cute and in love as they performed together giving audiences a sample of what to expect during Nicki’s Pink Print tour.
Big Sean blew up the stage with “Blessings” and “IDFWU” and E-40 even joined the fun performing his verse on the hot track and everyone in the crowd quickly turned up once the beat dropped.
The Weeknd brought out Alicia Keys to perform “Earned It” for a nice duet and even Empire stars, Yazz the Great, Jussie Smollet, and Serayah performed songs from the show like “Drip Drop” and “Up Down”. Of course to close out the show, BET brought out Jersey rapper, Fetty Wap for all the Trap Queens in the audience.
But the four most memorable performances of the night were:
1. The Reunion of Bad Boy and the Family – need we say more? Aside from that little tumble Diddy took last night, Bad Boy’s reunion was a segment everyone was waiting for. From Mase to 112 to Faith to Lil Kim popping up on stage in her “Hardcore” pose the performance was amazing! If Total, Black Robb, and Craig Mack were there it would’ve made the performance that much hotter!
2. The Smokey Robinson Tribute – one word, SOULFUL! The tribute was everything! Tori Kelly tore the stage down with her rendition of “Who’s Loving You” by the Jackson 5 and Smokey’s voice is still as smooth as silk, but the most memorable moment of his tribute was his speech. Smokey informed all entertainers to be grateful and blessed while reminding them to “not be so full of yourselves”. Say that Smokey!
3. Tamar Braxton and K. Michelle makeup performance – BET simply made history with this performance. How they were able to get these two ladies together for a performance and kiss and make up on live TV is beyond me but the performance was great! Even mama Patti Labelle joined the ladies on stage as they paid a tribute to the passing of the same-sex marriage law. Sidenote: Ms. Patti STILL got it! Sounding just like she did in her younger years.
4. The Janet Jackson Tribute & Janet’s return to music – this has to be THE most highly anticipated moment of the show. EVERYBODY was waiting for Janet’s epic return to the stage and although she did not perform (c’mon did you guys really think she would with a tour coming up?) she did deliver a speech and thank her husband and fans for giving her an incredible 25-year long career. Tinashe, Jason Derulo, and Ciara all paid tribute to Janet through dance as they performed her most memorable dance moves. Ciara killed Rhythm Nation!
I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the show minus the teleprompter mishap. The performances were great and so were the tributes. I did wonder why they didn’t give out many awards on camera. It would’ve been nice to hear more acceptance speeches.
Great job BET!
