An American Fashion Designer, and Project Runway alum, Mychael Knight is a decorated individual with a design aesthetic to match.
Born Michael Anthony Knight, Jr. on April 11, 1978, in Nuremberg, Germany to Pamela and Michael Anthony Knight, Sr. Knight acquired his taste for fashion living and traveling Europe at a young age. Which transcends into his future design aesthetic showcasing an understanding of the urbanity and sensuality of women. Later on, Knight would grow up to be one of the most decorated American fashion designers, the Atlanta fashion scene would witness.
Upon graduating college with Bachelor of Science degree in Apparel Design and Merchandising from Georgia Southern University, Knight broke into the fashion industry working as an intern at Wilbourn Exclusives in 2001. In 2002 he then became a Fashion Stylist in the music industry, styling stars for red carpet events, music videos etc. He became well known in Atlanta for his sharp yet chic aesthetic.
Knight later went on to hit mainstream waves making an appearance on the hit show, Project Runway (Bravo Network at the time). As a season 3 contestant, Knight would go on to win season three’s Fan Favorite award and to place fourth in the overall competition. Though he did not win the overall competition, it was just a stepping-stone to what was really in store for his career as a fashion designer. After season 3 of Project Runway concluded, Knight’s popularity and career catapulted. He designed a line of custom tees for the Starbucks Corporation. He also went on to launch an array of collections under his name and brand “Mychael Knight” across the fashion scene in Atlanta and even showcases at fashion events like NYFW and BET’s Rip The Runway. Knight even went on to launch Kitty & Dick, his male and female lingerie label, and his unisex fragrance, MajK.
In 2013, Knight became a contestant on Project Runway: All Stars (season 3). Though he did not take the winning title, he was still a fan favorite to see amongst the array of all-stars featured.
In September of 2017, Knight went on to showcase one of his last collections at NYFW. His Spring/Summer collection featured contemporary designs and his signature aesthetic perfectly bridging the gap of sexy yet chic womenswear.
In October of 2017, a month after NYFW Mychael Knight passed away. He was 39 years old. Although the cause of death is still uncertain, just the abundance of love, respect, and gratitude this designer has accumulated throughout his short career speaks volumes to a legacy that will continue to live on.
