Every now and then a movie comes around that reminds you just how amazing and scary being human can be. In this movie there are superheroes, no villains, and no cosmic event; just good old fashioned Man vs. Nature. Enter The Martian! This time around, albeit, it’s Mother Nature’s otherworldly Martian counterpart! Matt Damon is back as “Mark Watney” a brilliant botanist on a manned mission to Mars. While doing research on Martian soil with the rest of his crew a storm suddenly approaches threatening their mission and lives. Mark is seemingly lost as they try to escape the planet and presumed dead. He emerges the next day alone–on Mars–with no hope of rescue in site. Herein begins the magic of the movie as he resourcefully rises to the challenge to survive on a planet that is nothing but hostile to life.
This movie is nothing short of amazing. At first glance, you would think it is another Gravity, but you would be wrong. Like the aforementioned it is a true testament to the human spirit, but unlike it there are far more variables at play. Food, water, air, equipment, travel, and an interplanetary mission that the gods would be envious of. Matt Damon really is a stellar actor and you cannot help but love any character he portrays. Whether he is a kick ass spy or the first true Martian, it is always a treat to see him. Be sure you check out The Martian in theaters everywhere today!
