Hidden footage was recorded to catch the candid responses to those who were in question or participated in the new promotional launch.
“What? So it’s like a gay burger?” asked one man in the video.
“Do gay people even eat fast food?” said another.
“The meat tastes … sweeter,” said one woman after trying the burger.
Surprisingly and maybe not so surprisingly the response was filled with speculations and false assumptions. Once unwrapping the entire burger and reading the message within the actual paper it read, “We are all the same inside.” Simple, but very touching that brought one participant to tears.
For many LGBT people the issue is the same with judgment from preconceived notions rather than getting to know someone from within. As people we all desire to be heard, understood, and seen for who we are.
Fernando Machado, Senior V.P. of Global Branding for BK stated:
“As a brand, we welcome everyone. We felt that [the Proud Whopper] could bring to life a message of equality, self-expression, authenticity and just being who you are. As with anything in life, there will be people who will like it, there will people who will dislike it. We just hope that people will understand that the message is a beautiful one… We really want to be more than burgers, fries and shakes… [We want to] occupy a space that’s more meaningful to people.”
Most importantly proceeds from the burgers sold that day will be donated to scholarships for LGBT high school seniors graduating in 2015.
Applause, Applause to Burger King!
