After a month of shacking up with my boyfriend I’ve realized more than ever how much our communication sucks. Before I didn’t realize it because we weren’t in each other’s space everyday, nor had I seen how he managed his time too closely. No, we haven’t broken up if that’s what you’re thinking. He was only staying with me temporarily as he transitioned to the new home he purchased.
Although I know I’m not perfect and can be a little stubborn about some things, I’m still willing to listen and hear what a person has to say. Over the years I’ve learned how listening can be, so golden in this thing called life. Well, this is my struggle how do you listen to someone who doesn’t speak or let anything out?
Lauryn Hill once said, “I focus now on trying to understand than to be understood.” Those words have never left and will always remain with me.
I decided to step outside myself and observe how this man navigates in trials, successes, and day-to-day functionalities. Crazy thing is ladies again I tell you men are not that deep and very black and white. Yes, even some gay men are just as blah as straight men. Don’t get it twisted I love this man and I’m only trying to understand him better. I just know now more than ever moving in together may rip us apart if we don’t communicate better.
At the end of the day I’m a man although I’m gay and should still be treated as one. People have this misconstrued concept of what a man is and I’ll be the first to tell you that I am one. I may love Beyoncé and pop it with the best of the girls, but I pay my bills, run my household, and focused on my hustle just the same as any guy.
As a result I’m having us do more activities outside the house simply to observe and discover how we work together. I’ve realized two independent people don’t always work the best together. In any relationship it’s about teamwork with one another. One person doesn’t make the relationship at the minimum it takes two.
Remember if you run into a bump in your relationship focus more on trying to understand the other person. It’s not easy, but if they’re worth it then you’ll take the time to recognize the man you’re with.
