On June 3, 2014 Master Turntablist DJ Scratch and Musicologist released “The Big Payback” which is a two disc mixtape that highlights the pioneer of hip hop James Brown! A two disc mixtape simply does not do James Brown justice for the phenomenal impact that he has had on hip hop and today’s club and dance music! With “The Big Payback” you will get a glimpse into the variety of influences that Brown had on hip hop through the years.
“James Brown’s music is literally the Soundtrack of my life. My Grandmother exposed me to James Brown 45 years ago (1 Years Old)”, says award winning Turntablist DJ Scratch. “Who would have ever thought that James Browns’ music would later be the pillar of a new genre of music called hip hop; who would have ever thought I would be a part of history of this new genre of music. It’s all because of my love and passion for James Brown’s music.”
James Brown, known as Soul Brother #1, has blessed the world with amazingly ground breaking titles such as Eric B. & Rakim –”Eric B. Is President”, Big Daddy Kane – “Raw”, Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock – “It Takes Two”, and “U Don’t Know” – Jay Z to name but a few. Hip Hop is not the only genre that James Brown made an impact on! The Godfather of Soul has inspired many artists music such as Beyonce, EnVogue, Brandy and R. Kelly.
“The Big Payback has been my most ambitious project to date, and the ultimate reminder of James Brown’s truly pervasive impact on modern music. Remixing the JB catalog sparks a powerful realization: all the music that has most inspired my career — hip hop, soul, funk, Prince, Michael Jackson, Fela Kuti and more — is the direct spawn of James Brown’s genius.
