Last week reported that Fox not only renewed Empire for a sixth season, but opted to move on without Jussie Smollett for the time being. “By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for Season 6, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to ‘Empire,” Fox Entertainment and 20th Century Fox TV said. Shortly after Fox’s decision, Empire’s cast sent a letter in support of Jussie returning to the show, and now the cast, led by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, are continuing to fight for his return.

Show sources tell TMZ that cast members, including Taraji P Henson and Terrence Howard, believe Jussie deserves a fair chance to return. In fact, according to the publication, as soon as Fox execs announced their decision, the cast immediately reached out to “Empire” execs to rally for Smollett’s return.
Sources say the cast believes Jussie’s character is an integral part of the show, especially after his character got married in the first gay, black wedding on primetime TV.
We agree with the cast that Jussie’s character, Jamal Lyon, is an integral part of the show. As it stands, Jamal serves as the moral center of the Lyon Family and to a greater extent the series at large. We hope the execs at Fox will change their minds, however, with the ongoing legal battle between Jussie and The City of Chicago, that may be easier said than done. We will keep you posted.
