The nineties was chalked full of some pretty amazing animated series. Sure you had your goofy, adult humored NickToons, but you also had some quality series that mirrored real world problems. Disney’s Gargoyles is definitely one of those series! Created by Greg Weismann, the series focused on “strange, unnatural creatures” who were stone by day and alive at night. Now rumor has it than a script has been penned for the film and a live action movie of the series is coming in 2018! Yep, Goliath, Hudson, Bronx, Brooklyn, Lexington, Broadway, and Angela are coming to a theater near you!
As you may have forgotten these gargoyles partnered with humans to protect their castle from Viking attacks during medieval times, while the human in turn protected them from being smashed during the day. After a devastating act of betrayal that destroyed most of their clan; Goliath leader of the Gargoyles, along with five of his brethren were frozen in stone by a spell for a thousand years. The spell could only be broken when their castle rose above the sky. Thanks to billionaire tech wiz (evil Iron Man much?), David Xanatos they awake in present day. By circumstance they befriend a police detective, Elisa Maza and begin to defend Manhattan from all sorts of criminal, superhuman, and supernatural threats!
There has been no news on casting, but most likely they will use the same technology the creators of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did to recreate these heroic monsters. Another rumor churning out of this mill is that once Robert Downey, Jr. has parted ways with the Iron Man and Avengers franchises he will be taking over as Xanatos! He definitely looks and acts the part. Plus, it will be cool to see him shed his Iron Man armor for Metal Clan battle suit. Also, Eva Mendes would make a gorgeous Elisa. More information about the film should be coming out soon, in the meantime catch a refresher of the series with the pilot episode below!
