Kendrick Lamar the songstress is taking no prisoners. Growing up singing at karaoke spots with family the vocal powerhouse can officially call Interscope Records her musical home. KontrolMag had the opportunity to chat it up with the rising talent recently and got all the details to share ranging from her past abusive relationship, what it was like dating Justin Bieber, and most importantly her upcoming EP.
Where do you find you influence?
I’ve always loved music. As a kid my family and I had a karaoke machine, which I loved.
How would you describe you sound?
My sound is very relatable. I love relating to my fans by singing everyday life situations. It’s more of an urban pop sound.
Explain your creative process in the studio?
In the studio I don’t like writing alone, so I collab with a writer and together we brainstorm a concept.
Was it difficult losing your previous record deals?
Yes, it was hard when they don’t believe in you. Interscope was like a blessing in disguise.
When did you know music was what you wanted to do?
I wasn’t too sure in the beginning, but I went to LA and kept pursuing modeling and acting.
What made you decide to sing about your past abusive relationship?
I know how it goes. I really felt as if people my age didn’t have a voice. I wanted to be that voice.
What inspired you to release “That’s Me Right There”
I was inspired to write a track that made people feel confident in their relationships. Like, “Yep that’s MINE, know that” as she laughs.
How did you end up in the abusive relationship?
I didn’t know at first, but gradually started to. It took over my life. It all really came as a shock.
What was your healing process like?
My healing process was very tragic. I was stuck between staying and leaving. I ended up forcing my brother to move in an apartment with me in LA. Plus all the genuine support from my friends and family.
What was it like dating Justin Bieber?
We were both so young [around the age of ] 15 or 16 years old. It was puppy love.
Are you single now?
Yes, I’m single. I’ve been single for about 4 months now.
How would you describe the young woman you are today verses who you once were?
Back then I was scared and insecure, but now I’m happy, confident and blessed. Plus my EP is finally done!
