Clubesque, a unique experience in interactive theater, took Center Stage by storm last Friday. Clubesque invited the audience into a world of dance, fun, lust, love and sex expressed through song and fabulous clothes and makeup, hunni. Minimal set design, effects, and props put the attendees’ focus on the enticing performers, who encouraged–expected even–audience participation. Executive producer and star Sunni Stephens describes Clubesque as “a modern day cabaret,” a full musical revue exploring different genres of song and disciplines of dance.
Stephens definitely achieved her vision of bringing several types of music and dance together as the audience experienced everything from a speakeasy to a trip to FunkyTown. At the end of the evening, the whole theater erupted into a full-blown party–music blasting and everyone up out of their seats dancing.
Clubesque not only celebrates different disciplines of dance, but also the complexity of a woman. As Sunni explains, “as a young woman we start off trendy, then we get older and put our own twist on it.” As we grow into our womanhood though, she continues, “we really come into our own.” The show explores all those different phases as well.
For the audience, this meant that we not only witnessed tap, jazz, burlesque and drag, but also we saw everything from a damsel to a dominatrix.
As a theater lover and someone who takes every opportunity to see live dance and music, this show truly surprised me. I loved how the performers maintained the crowd’s energy throughout the show. On top of that, they were having so much fun on stage the audience could not help but be drawn into their excitement.
