Jennifer Hudson is packing her bags and headed to Broadway! The RnB singer is going to be in John Doyle’s The Color Purple. The grammy winner will play blues singer and mistress, Shug Avery. This will be Hudson’s first musical since her award winning, 2006 film, Dreamgirls.
Oprah Winfrey will also be involved behind the scenes in the production revival along with Her business partner Scott Sanders.
The new production of the play began in London and ran in the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2013. The Color Purple was on Broadway from 2005 until 2008 but, this 2015 Broadway revival will come with a stronger emotional punch. The play will include music by singers and songwriters, Brenda Russell, Aliee Willis, and Stephen Bray.
Additional casting for the play were not broadcasted.
Jennifer will leave a lasting mark on the Broadway stage with her powerful voice. The play will return to Broadway this fall. We’re rooting for you Jennifer! Maybe this will be her chance to have an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony)! She’s already checked off Grammy and Oscar! Two down, two more to go.
