Fourteen years ago Jagged Edge released their highest selling album entitled, Heartbreak, which sold an impressive 3 million plus copies. On October 27, 2014 fans can expect to hear part two of this groundbreaking album. Last night #KontrolMag had the opportunity to sit down and get the first listen to the group’s new music at Perimeter Mall’s Microsoft store. Needless to say it was a treat to hear the project while experiencing real R&B all over again.
Over the years everyone can attest to the saturation of R&B with hip-hop. In the intro of their album the guys breakdown the formula for a successful R&B track nowadays. For example, majority of the songs released by urban singers usually have a rapper on the track either in the middle or end to have a higher success rate. Sadly, looking over the charts this is true. The public seems to have a taste for a rapper if there is singing on a record.
Jagged Edge are attempting to spearhead this venture of bring R&B back by the sounds of Heartbreak 2 and they just might do it. Songs like, “Getting Over You” hit me instantly like when I was a teenager feeling their soul on a record. Listening to them sing with so much passion and feeling felt authentic. The crowd bopped side to side and embraced it all.
The next single expected by the quartet is, “Ready”, listeners can definitely expect to hear this at least mixed while at the club. The beat alone has that hard hip-hop feel, but laced with their vocals. Evidently these guys are not playing and have a mission to complete.
Oh and of course we have some juice too! Well amongst the crowd there were celerity sightings such as Dondria, Bobby V, but no Jermaine Dupri. Yup, and he was suppose to be hosting the evening. A disclaimer was given that he had a delayed flight, but after all the guys were just recently kicked out of his birthday party. Hmmm we smell something here.
