When discussing beauty what all comes to mind? Should our outer appearance reconcile with what america feels is beautiful? Better yet, should we be patronized or disgruntled if we don’t have the “perfect” appearance. What someone might think is perfect can exclude what imperfections we all may face. From moles to freckles that we cover on our face with foundation. To the stretch marks we hide on our stomachs that represent the life and birth of another. We shouldn’t be afraid to show our natural attributes.
Sahara Donovan has always advocated for women of color. Sahara Donovan is a mother, activist, and creator of “Brown Tea” apparel. She has made headlines for her courageous imagery this past week. Donovan and Chicago native photographer Jamal Hersey (@malvisions) created a powerful story with a image of her in nature embracing her imperfections. Kontrol asked Donavon, is there anything you would like to say about beauty or WOC? She stated “I want our woman to know we are all beautiful no matter what shade, shape or hair texture. The message behind the picture is to encourage women to love themselves. Social media’s idea of what women should look like can be unrealistic at time, and the Instagram models and celebrates we see everyday don’t make it any easier…insecurities won’t go away overnight but eventually they will.” She also said “if my picture touched someone anyone and inspired them to see themselves as beautiful then that’s all I wanted…love yourself no matter who’s watching.”
Melanin Monday’s embraces powerful woman that encourage others. It is hard enough for woman of color to be embraced and appreciated for their hair, face and body features. Our melanin shouldn’t be shamed. It should symbolize greatness and enrichment. Today, we admire the beautiful Sahara Donovan for being just that.
