It has been a long road with the women of the hit series, Single Ladies. The first season was almost marred by a major cast change up, then VH-1 abruptly (and still mysteriously) cancelled the show despite its high, strong ratings! A year later, the show is now the flagship series of Centric and has introduced some “pretty” new blood to the cast, legendary actress Melissa de Sousa! Melissa is a Hollywood powerhouse with over twenty years in the industry. Her enduring career is only matched by her immense beauty and even greater talent. This lovely lady is now lending her talent to Single Ladies, where she will be causing her fair share of drama in the role of Austin Aguilera! “I’m really glad to be apart of the show and I can promise you, you’re going to love every minute of it!”
Austin Aguilera is the latest addition to the cast, but is no one to overlook. This party girl is ready to take the Atlanta club scene by storm and is known for being the life of the party. In fact, she and a much admired male lead of the show go into business together. Still, like any pretty girl on a drama Austin has her issues–daddy issues! “Austin is the new girl in town and she has quite a presence…but she’s hurt by her relationship with her father and wants his approval so badly…” Austin’s father is a decorated army general who does not approve of his daughter’s lifestyle. Melissa admits her character seems to be acting out to earn her father’s attention and respect. “She’s really seeking his approval…I know a lot of women can relate to that…you know as a woman when you have your father in your life what he thinks about you is so important…” Austin does not appear in the first episode of the show, she makes her debut on the second episode of the new season, Remix.
The new season of Single Ladies begins on a very dark note with Raquel’s disappearance and legalized death. This scenario seems to indicate the season will have a more serious undertone. Melissa confirms this but assures new and veteran fans they are going to learn a lot more about new and old characters on the show. “I feel like they’re giving even more depth to the characters and you see sides of them you might not have seen before…” She candidly admits during the interview she had not watched the show prior to being cast but is now truly a fan herself. “I’m not saying it is good just because I’m on it…the cast, the writers, the directors–everyone really pours a lot into it [the show]…”
Whether she is being herself or Austin Aguilera, Melissa de Sousa is truly amazing. Single Ladies is finally back and we are more than happy to see her as part of the fold. Get ready for betrayal, outrage, and parties! It is going to be one helluva season!
