After five years of silence Michelle Williams has officially returned to us with a dose of needed inspiration. The longtime hit-maker is serving her fans and new listeners up with an album that’s sure to get any listener up on their feet. The new sound for the songstress marks a new era of creativity. Blending pop, r&b, hip hop, african beats and gospel she produces a sound like no other playing on mainstream airwaves. Somewhat similar to how Mary Mary has garnered their audience fusing hip-hop and r&b into gospel it stand out.
Pulling inspiration from her life struggles Williams lets down her walls sharing her battle with depression. Back in 2013 the singer admitted her struggle and stated:
“I’ve dealt with depression. I had to choose to get out of bed and do whatever I needed to do to be happy. We’re taught, ‘Just go to church and pray about it. The Lord is going to heal you.’ Well, in the meantime, I believe God-gifted people, physicians, doctors, therapists — that’s your healing. Take advantage of it. Go see a professional so that they can assess you. It’s OK if you’re going through something. Depression is not OK, but it is OK to go get help.
She later continued,
“Sometimes you’re going to wake up on the wrong side of the bed or some situation might have you down in the dumps, but you have to choose to be happy. I’m choosing life. And I’m hoping this album makes people want to choose life.
Looks as though Michelle is feeding the world with something that’s been needed. Released tracks like “Fire” and “Free” ignite a burning flame of hope in the souls of all who listen. Her summer hit “Say Yes” alongside her Destiny’s Child group-mates had the public all in a buzz of a reunion, but it seems as though Michelle’s currently on her own path and mission.
Vocally she ‘s more assured than ever with confidence pouring through every track. Sharing her truth and honesty of depression gives this body of work even more substance while listening. Officially dubbing this as an open journal in musical formation Williams does not disappoint one bit! Truly a must listen for sure.
