Prince Inspired By “This Could Be Us” Meme

By Tiara Shae

You know those hilariously random memes for “This could be us but you playin” that you’ve been seeing all over Instagram? According to Entertainment Weekly, Prince is a huge fan of those hilarious couple memes! Prince likes the memes so much; it inspired him to write a song called “This Could Be Us”.

The song hasn’t been leaked or anything but Prince invited music journalist, Jon Bream, to listen to some of his new, highly anticipated recordings. Bream and Prince discussed over the phone about the album creation process and music that will be featured on the album. Prince’s album has no date or title just yet.

Bream writes on the Star Tribune website, “ Prince explained that the song, ‘This Could Be Us,’ was inspired by a meme of him and Apollonia riding on a motorcycle, clearly a scene taken from the 1984 movie ‘Purple Rain.’ It’s a joyful ballad with some ecstatic Prince vocalizing.” Although the song came about due to a random meme, it already sounds like this song is going to be a hit.

Prince continued to play new tunes for the lucky writer, including a rap song featuring Rita Ora that he is very ready to release. Prince shared his frustration with, as the writer states, how slowly wheels turn in the music business. Prince shares, “We should be able to make music and put it out now.” It’s shocking that one of the greatest artist to have ever created music has to be patient when it comes to releasing his music. You would think that the record labels would be in a huge hurry to release his songs! Perhaps the delay is due to the extensive lawsuit that Prince endured with Warner Bros for the rights to his own songs that took 18-years to settle. Prince is still signed to Warner Bros.
