That Feel Good “She’s Gotta Have It” Fashion Vibes – Let’s Get Into It

2017 was the epitome of black excellence and black culture. If there was ever a time to stand in your blackness with dignity it was now! From music, politics, sports, fashion, and film, there were highlighted moments that made you just feel good, good about all of you. For the film turned series ‘She’s Gotta Have it’, that feeling of dignity was for the CULTURE.

Now, I could talk about the dialect of the film and its aspect on black women and men finding themselves. But, I’m here to get into the fashion. The 1990’s Spike Lee joint premiered on Netflix Thanksgiving Day. The style for Nola Darling (played by DeWanda Wise) was what I envision a black woman comfortable in her skin should look like.

Costume designer Marci Rodgers was able to capture the personality of each character through their clothing. With each personality phase Ms. Darling went through, viewers were able to get a glimpse of her free spirit eccentric style.

Episode 3 of the series #LBD (Little Black Dress) was by far my favorite. One little black dress was worn and styled different for each of Nola’s dates with companions Mars Blackmon, Greer Childs, and Jamie Overstreet. I like to refer to the leading males after TLC’s Grammy award-winning album Crazy, Sexy, Cool. Check out 1 dress worn 3 different ways below.

Scenes with each friend, companion or sexual partner Nola’s eccentric style consisted of vibrant colors, mixed prints and patterns with a little bit of nudity.  She’s Gotta Have It is the diary of style for all black women who are free-spirited and those who are not. Want the look? Although you may not find the exactly look. Similar styles can be purchased via vintage and thrift stores and local clothing stores as well.

If she was painting attending her first art exhibit or walking down the streets of Brooklyn Nola Darling’s beauty did not go unnoticed and her impeccable style set the tone for the re-make of this film. We can’t wait to see more of Nola Darling’s style for Season 2 of ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ which will begin filming soon.

Where ever you may choose to shop, let’s get into the looks that made this black and white film become more bold and colorful 30 years later!
