Serena and Venus Williams are probably the most famous sisters in the World, they’re super talented, rumored sweethearts, rich and beautiful. Well, Shamil Tarpischev doesn’t agree with that last part. On Russian television, Shamil referred to the duo as the “Williams brothers.” Going on to say “It’s frightening when you look at them.” I’m not sure what was in his tea that night or why he would refer to these women as men, but it ruffled quite a few feathers.
The WTA Tour have fined Shamil $25,000.00 which is the maximum allowed, they are also seeking his banishment as chairman for a year AND want him to publicly apologize to Venus & Serena. As he should!
“The statements made by Shamil Tarpischev on Russian television with respect to two of the greatest athletes in the history of women’s tennis are insulting, demeaning and have absolutely no place in our sport,” WTA Tour chairman and CEO Stacey Allaster said in a statement.
“Mr. Tarpischev’s statements questioning their genders tarnish our great game and two of our champions,” the statement continued. “His derogatory remarks deserve to be condemned and he will be sanctioned.”
Of course, Shamil argues that he was simply joking and doesn’t understand why he should be suspended. Sir, really? Well, the joke is now on him. Perhaps he should take the time given during his suspension and learn how to be funny.
