Style Watchin’: Trey Songz

When it comes to Trey Songz, it’s no secret that the Grammy nominated singer has a legion of female fans. His career-making music has been based off appealing to women’s emotions with sex fueled, player-ish type lines with the occasional “Okay, so I’m ready to settle down now” motif in songs.

In addition to female fans, Songz also has a bevy of males who may not just like his songs, but his style to boot.

With a more slender-cut body type, Songz can get away with most clothing he wears. However, that doesn’t mean he’s exempt from certain looks that brings out his best.

Check out a few words on Songz style of choice hosted by GQ:

On having a few “good” suits out a collection of many:

It’s not about having a plethora of suits, but having a few good ones. It’s all about fit. The contour of your body. If your shoulders are broad, you shouldn’t have shoulder pads. If you’re not a big man, you shouldn’t have extra space. I think it’s definitely worth having it properly fitted. You owe it to yourself to know what it’s supposed to look like. If you wear a suit and it’s tailored to perfection, you’ll love it.

If you want an escape from the suit look or just rock a style without the jacket, check out Songz during the 2010 Bet Awards:

Dressed in Devon Scott, Songz sports a tailored button up shirt and a vest followed by a lapel pin. Lapel pins adds a nice accent to blazers, suit jackets and vests. Now lapel pins ain’t just floating around your favorite stores all willy-nilly. If you’re not big on online shopping, try your local Macy’s for a good one. For those of you who do find comfort behind online shopping, LordandTaylor.com offers great varieties in pins.

On watch rockin’ regardless of attire:

Always wear a good watch, no matter what if you are wearing a suit or sweats. A good watch will hold value over time. It’s not about the brightest or the biggest diamonds, it’s about quality mechanisms, the heritage of the company you’re buying it from. I have ten watches but I probably only wear four consistently.

For the man who likes to stay budget friendly, Macy’s is still a good choice for suit accessories. Also, check out Nordtroms online for some great deals to fit your pockets.

On appreciating dressing down versus always being dressed up:

I think clothes are very much a representation of your attitude and the way you feel. I really love to be dressed down, though. If I could, I’d prefer to wear a white t-shirt and basketball shorts and some trainers [every day].

One version of Songz ‘dress down’ days can consist of an easy black tea and black jeans. One good recommendation for us fellas is all-black tees from Sean John at a Marshalls or Macy’s. The black lasts longer after being washed.

If you’re of a thinner build like Songz, Levi’s skinny black jeans will work well in your favor. And for those of you  with a thicker build, try Levi’s 514 jeans or even  relaxed fit black chinos. Top it off with a contrasting shoe or keep it simple with all black high-top.
