Beauty Expert and Award-Winning Hairstylist Sherita Cherry sprinkles her Black Girl Magic around the globe.
Sherita’s reign began in the dorms of Clark Atlanta University. Sherita was the go-to hairstylist for her peers and had clientele lined up until her salon a.k.a dorm room was shut down by the dean. Similar to most college students being unemployed wasn’t an option so Sherita searched for work and landed a job as a shampoo assistant at Escape Hair Salon of Atlanta.
Sherita gives credit to Escape Hair Salon of Atlanta owner Carol Morrow for mentoring and training her. Carol put Sherita in competitions and exposed her to John Paul Mitchell’s training program. With hard work and dedication she eventually became the National Color Educator for John Paul Mitchell Systems. “ I perfected my craft early in my career because I was immediately able to work with a major company that really put a lot in me to train me in cutting and coloring to teach all over the world. My mentorship was very important because Carol Morrow exposed me to a lot very early in my career.”
Sherita pays it forward by educating other women. She started training stylist when she became a salon owner and began to witness the stylists evolve before her eyes. Sherita’s brand was constantly growing so she decided to expand the mentorship program and make it a movement. She founded “Stylist Who Brunch” with her daughter as a mentorship platform that created a space where stylist can connect, network, and soak up business knowledge directly from her.
Sherita has styled many notable celebrities. The former Kontrol Magazine cover girl Latoya Luckett was her favorite celebrity to style. Sherita and Latoya collaborated at a critical time in Latoya’s career and their personalities instantly clicked. “She understood and valued me as stylist and I understood that she was trying to reinvent herself. She was really easy to work with. And she has amazing hair.” Michelle Obama is another queen with great hair and is Sherita’s dream client. Sherita aspires to be like the former First Lady and would love to have one on one access to her to learn from her character. Sherita is a fan of Michelle Obama’s classic style “And she has amazing hair.”
Sherita was named “Rising ICON” for her role as a platform artist, educator, speaker, and salon owner. The dots began to connect the day she received her award from Bronner Bros. and she began to understand her purpose. Sherita felt encouraged by her peers and inspired to stay focused and never give up on her dreams.
“Hard work never goes unnoticed.”
Doors began to open for the “Rising ICON” and she soon found herself on a nationwide campaign with United States Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin. “Styling Healthier Futures.” focus was to teach women how to be fit and fabulous. Sherita was alarmed to discover that a high percentage of African American women were overweight and that a lot of them didn’t exercise because of hair maintenance. She herself learned some things while on her journey to educate black women around the world about health and hair. The former foodie began to take life seriously to avoid hereditary health issues. Sherita always exercised but lives life on a schedule to maintain her petite frame. Every day after prayer and exercise Sherita eats a fist sized portion meal and always does an intense workout after consuming starches. “A gym membership is cheaper than medication.” We can say amen to that!
Let’s talk beauty.
Sherita’s favorite hair care tip is to always shampoo and condition hair. The conditioner must sit for 3-5 minutes to give the cuticles time to close and strengthen. New Year new color? Sherita predicts that color will be the hair trend of 2018. She likes to say that colors have 3 levels whisper, scream, and shout. Whisper being the subtle introduction to color and shout is when you blast it out. If color isn’t your thing grab some extensions because Sherita thinks extensions will never stop. Extensions are popular but Sherita believes that the bob is a classic. “I love bobs. Everyone can wear it. A bob is a timeless and signature hairstyle.”
That Sherita Cherry reign just won’t let up!
