What is Jojoba Oil?
Jojoba oil is the liquid plant wax that comes from the seed of the jojoba plant, which is a shrub native to the southwestern United States. It has been used in folk medicine and today its uses are for the treatment of acne, psoriasis, sunburn, and chapped lips. Jojoba oil is easily accessible (my mom gets hers from the beauty supply store) and it’s pretty cheap (between $5-$10). You can also get it from department stores, supermarkets, and health food stores.
What are Some Other Uses of Jojoba Oil?
I use jojoba oil as a face moisturizer. It mimics the sebum that skin naturally produces, so it helps control oil levels. My mom recommended it to me when I told her about all of the unnecessary products that I was using to keep my combination skin completely moisturized. Other uses include hair moisturizer, removing wrinkles, makeup remover, lip balm and it also helps fight infections. Jojoba oil also contains Vitamin E and Vitamin B Complex.
But I Thought You Weren’t Supposed to Use Oils to Moisturize Your Face…
Before talking to my mom, I had read that you weren’t supposed to use oils to moisturize your face, and the website that I read gave me some reason that I don’t even remember. What I do remember is that the reason made sense to me at the time so I didn’t question it. This made me skeptical to try simply applying jojoba oil to my face and neck after washing my face. But after just a few days of doing this twice a day, I saw my skin begin to glow (naturally, not because of highlighter lol) . The dry patches that had appeared due to improper moisturizing are now gone and the annoying pimples that I used to get significantly decreased (I still get them every once in the while because I have a sweet tooth). I went from applying 4 cleansing & moisturizing products to my face daily to applying just 2 and the results are even better. Just another case of “Mother knows best” I guess. I have yet to use jojoba oil in my hair but once I do, I’ll be sure to give an update!
