VH1’s hit series Black Ink immediately captivated the world with varying personalities, in the city that never sleeps, trying to make their dreams come true through the doors of the tattoo shop Black Ink. The eclectically fashioned and personable bunch, located in historical Harlem are definitely making the most of the opportunity they have been given. One of the cast favorites’ is Sassy, and she certainly lives up to her name. With a large tattoo of a rifle on her petite frame, Sassy is serving a lot of spunk. In addition to her personality, Sassy ‘s fashion has also been a fan favorite of the cast. The vehicle behind her Fashion movement is Fashion Stylist Sigourney Salley, or more popularly known, StyleGxd.
Saturday I got to hangout with StyleGxd and the Black Ink crew at Ink124. True to form the event brought out all types of people with a myriad number of styles. After observing the crowd, I got to sit down with Stylegxd and pick her brain on Fashion and Sassy’s style. If you’ve kept up with the show you can see the clear evolution of Sassy’s style from season 1 to now. Out the gate Sig had a clear plan of action for the growth of Sassy’s Fashion and her personal Brand success. Beginning with street style Sig slowly introduced Sassy to the Fashion World. Keeping the bigger picture in focus the Fashion Stylist maintained a unique eye for her client by making sure she didn’t look like a typical reality star rocking body-con dresses, and “basic Instagram outfits”.
With the vision of changing the face of Fashion for reality stars Stylegxd has begun preparing her clients to eventually be featured on GQ, MARIE CLAIRE, and VOGUE. With style inspiration stemming from The Cosby’s favorite Fashion sister Denise, Patricia Fields and Betsy Johnson Stylegxd has an extensive palette of Fashion footnotes to pull from. Comparing her work relationship with Sassy to that of Ty and Bey, Sig feels they have the same great relationship where they can work through different opinions on style choices. With just three short television seasons, Sassy and StyleGxd have already brought viewers new style trends. “I feel like if you can make Rihanna a fashion icon, Sassy can be a fashion icon”. There is no question that there has been a Fashion elevation with the cast of Black Ink. As the show has grown so has Stylegxd, she is now also styling Puma, and his wife Quani the newest cast member of the show. Sig is also working with Quani on a Fashion Blog called Life, Art, Style, which will eventually branch off into an online boutique.
“Be on the look out!” with an up coming event in conjunction with Fabric Twins, Sig will be hosting alongside Love & Hip Hop New Yorks Tahiry June 10th. She also has the opportunity to expand her styling portfolio to the Love & Hip Hop New York cast. There is so much more to come from Stylegxd, and we can’t wait to see it all! Be sure to follow Stylegxd on Instagram at Stylegxd, and on Twitter at Sigourney_style.
