The Real Deal

Suits, ties, jeans or slacks, the year of the gentleman has returned and in a big way! Some men prefer the “Dapper Dan” style, while others are a little more laid back. This designer has something for everyone and his list of clientele showcases just that.  Recently Kontrol had the chance to catch up with fashion designer and icon Steeven Kodjia, creator of French Deal, to discuss everything from on the court designs to the awesome styling of the late rap artist, Nipsey

“The French Deal man’s style is the perfect mix of these worlds, which can all be found in any man’s closet. I have no preference, because it’s this mix that summarizes the style of the French Deal man.”

French Deal is the name of the brand. A brand that reflects urban elegance. “The French Deal man is an urban dandy”, states the brand creator, Steeven Kodjia. There are several styles that the brand offers, but states that his favorite style is a perfect mix of urban wear and classic wear. “The French Deal man’s style is the perfect mix of these worlds, which can all be found in any man’s closet. I have no preference, because it’s this mix that summarizes the style of the French Deal man.” “Each piece in our collection is important and can easily be combined with a multitude of pieces at French Deal as well as other pieces outside of the styles that we offer”, explains Steeven, which is something that can be seen in the pieces that have been worn by several celebrities across the world. The pieces have been inspired by his culture. “I get my best inspiration from my own culture, which is African and Hip Hop. The inspiration comes to me daily through music, food, fabrics, smells and images that speak to me”, the brand creator shared.

“So I started taking action to make my dreams become a reality”

Imagine knowing at a young age what you want to be and actually growing up to be just that, which is the story of his life.  “Ever since I was a kid I have been immersed in fashion, observing my father’s outfits in his dressing room (when I was young) and also observing his elegance while he was putting his outfit together and getting dressed. It cultivated something in my subconscious that I have continued to develop unconsciously as I have progressed through my life. The day I sold my first pair of jeans to a customer, I knew I wasn’t going to stop there. Then, from sale to sale, I started dreaming big and began thinking that one day I would have my own brand. So I started taking action to make my dreams become a reality”, he reflects. “Indeed, we work with different celebrities, each experience is unique, and each experience is incredible. We listen to our customers. They all have unique voices and are all equally amazing to work with!” Mr. Kodjia states.

“French Deal is different because our history is different. We do not tell the same story”

With designs and culture changing all over the world, fashion has recently taken a turn for the worst for some designers,as all of the world has watched and waited while popular brands were being boycotted by well-known celebrities. “I find it unfortunate that these brands have such a lack of respect and create designs which may affect certain segments of their own customer base. It’s unacceptable. The African American community are consumers of luxury goods. Contrary to what other large, luxury brands might do, French Deal acknowledges and celebrates black culture and highlights the cultural richness of the African continent. This is not opportunism. Our goal is to represent this heritage that’s rich in value and craftsmanship. We are in a new era and we are positioning ourselves within this industry from this perspective”, the famed designer stated.

French Deal has been seen on the red carpet and in several award shows. Recently we saw the late rapper Nipsey Hussle rocking a suit from the French Deal collection. The look that was worn by Nipsey was to mark an elaborate occasion as well as set a mark in history that we did not know at that time… “The loss of an artist like Nipsey Hussle is really sad, his death touched me. We have lost a father, an artist, a husband, a head of the family and a beautiful person who worked for the good of our community. I was very much honored when Nipsey wore the French Deal tuxedo at the Grammy award show. This memory will be forever engraved in the history of French Deal”, shares French Deal creator. This brand is leaving a mark in history! “French Deal is different because our history is different. We do not tell the same story. I don’t compare French Deal to these other brands. French Deal is authentic, original, and one of a kind”, he says of his brand. French Deal will leave a legacy that is, as he elegantly puts it, known for “highlighting the cultural richness of Black Culture”.

Father’s Day is approaching and there are so many dads with different styles. Often we run into men who prefer the grown and sexy look and dads who prefer gray sweats, not that there is anything wrong with that because there are ladies that do prefer those gray sweats as well. French Deal has something special planned for the dad that doesn’t mind stepping out of his comfort zone, “A masculine elegance in which women will enjoy offering quality and refined pieces to their husbands!” Just in case you are wondering about seeing everyone in those outfits that you picked out especially for hubby or dad, French Deal does not mass produce. “We produce in small quantities for our customers, which is a base that’s constantly growing day by day”. Steeven Kodjia explained.
