Where it Started!
Julian first realized his love of all things fashion around the age of 8 or 9 but wasn’t quite sure what it really was or what he was fixated on pursuing. As we all know that did not stop him from becoming a notable name within the industry. Julian went on to study fashion design and marketing at the American InterContinental University. Julian started out as a fashion designer trying to find a way to get his designs out there. He created Kontrol to give himself a platform to put his designs out there and put himself out there as a stylist. From a table at The Cheesecake Factory with his ambition, determination, creativity, and Janet Jackson’s Control playing in the background, Kontrol Magazine was born.

“I started Kontrol because no one would give me an opportunity to be show my talents in the industry. I also saw there was a need for black high fashion in magazines. We are one of the top buyers in fashion but there were no magazines that showed us in fashion the way vogue, Elle and other magazines showcased white America. “
Breaking into the Industry!
While it was Kontrol Magazine that first made Julian Lark an entrepreneur, it was Love and Hip Hop’s Rasheeda, who was Julian’s first celebrity client. From there he went on to style Braxton Family Value’s Braxton Sisters, and many more. Julian Lark has worked hard to break barriers and labels. Being a stylist based in Atlanta you can get labeled as an “Atlanta Stylist” meaning to have a certain aesthetic that is ghetto or ratchet. Julian is one of those stylist that has opened the door further and help bring high fashion to Atlanta. This was no easy task being that Julian started in this industry when many people did not know what a stylist was and did not take the work of a stylist seriously. Julian Lark not only helped show the world what a stylist is and does but uses his knowledge from the industry to teach and mentor up and coming stylist.

“I think the industry is a little more open and willing to allow new talent an opportunity to showcase their talent now…. I think it’s easier now to establish one’s self as a stylist. So many new doors have opened in the realm of styling, fashion and even entrepreneurship. “
