Brett Gray star of ”On My Block”
On My Block
Wonder what’s going on in “On My Block”? Well, Netflix and writer Lauren Lungerich are about to tell you. “On My Block” is a coming-of-age comedy based in South Central, Los Angeles, starring Brett Gray. It airs on Netflix March 16th. It tells the story of four street savvy teens trying to navigate their way through school.
Known for his roles in movies like Metrocard, Tortoise, and the Tale of Four, Brett is not new to this. He has been acting since age 7. “I told my mom I wanted to act and she immediately enrolled me in a performing arts school,” says the Philly-native. From then on, he fell in love with it.
His role in “On My Block” happened quickly. His agent called him about the role. Before he knew it they began taping. Though “On My Block” is a sitcom, it deals with real situations. Many teens will certainly relate.
Brett plays Jamal Turner, who finds himself in all kinds of mischief. “Jamal is like half me and half acting,” says Brett. “Jamal is more impulsive,” he continues. That is what gets him into so much trouble. “I would probably be in as much trouble as him if I were more spontaneous,” he says laughing. “
“On My Block” is just one of Brett’s projects. He can also be seen in a guest role on NBC’s “Rise.” Another story about teens told from a different perspective. “Rise” is more about kids viewed as misfits. They are just looking for their place in the world. ”Rise” will premiere March 13th.
What’s Next
For Brett, acting is just one of his many talents. He is also an artist. “I love music,” Brett says. Brett remembers his mom listening to all types of music. “My mixtape will be a mixture of Hip-Hop and R&B, with a feel-good vibe,” he says with a gleam in his voice.
With the mixtape set for release this summer and “Own My Block,” Brett is extremely busy. “When I am not on set, I am in the studio,” says the 21-year-old. “I am learning to find a balance between the two, I just have to find time for myself,” he adds. As for right now, he is just finding enjoyment in his passions.
