Reality-TV star and former member of the 90’s girl group Xscape has created quite a bit of buzz recently regarding her decision to permanently change her eye color from brown to ice-gray using an iris implant through the procedure known as BrightOcular. We recently broke the news of Tiny undergoing this procedure, but wanted to come back to actually explain what it is.
From BrightOcular.com, BrightOcular is defined as being a “United States developed artificial iris implant made of a thin, flexible, biocompatible, colored medical grade silicone which has been developed to alter iris appearance for medical and cosmetic purposes. The intraocular implant is used to treat or alleviate cases of heterochromia, ocular albinism, and other iris-related abnormalities by protecting the eyes from the harmful effects of sunlight in patients who suffer from high levels of photosensitivity. The United States patent approved artificial iris implant covers up iris defects such as coloboma, aniridia, severe iris atrophies, iridoschisis, and also allows for the change in eye color for cosmetic reasons.”
Although, the site states that this procedure was developed in the United States, it is illegal. Those interested will have to go outside of the U.S. like Tiny, who went to Africa to get the procedure done. But before you jump on the bandwagon and decide to get this procedure done yourself, please consider the risks. Medical professionals have stated that the procedure can be sight-threatening and can cause glaucoma, cataract and corneal problems.
So what do you think? Will BrightOcular become the new beauty trend for those looking for a more permanent solution to different colored eyes? Share your thoughts below!
