The hip hop world was stunned as they awoke on yesterday morning to the news that A$AP Mob founder, A$AP Yams, had passed away.
According to Hot New Hip Hop, the 26-year-old’s death was confirmed on social media early Sunday morning by his fellow A$AP Mob members , A$AP Rocky and A$AP Ferg.
Yams (real name Steven Rodriquez), formed A$AP Mob back in 2007 and played a huge role in their music/beat choices as well as creative decisions on what would be released.
The sought out ‘visionary’ had a drug addiction in the past, mostly with codeine and Xanax, but in the summer of 2014 the A$AP mogul checked into a rehab facility as reported by BET.
Coincidentally, he tweeted “Bodeine Brazy” on January 16, noting his drug of choice in which was his last tweet.
Bandmate A$AP Ant spoke with VLAD TV to give his thoughts on Yams’ death.
“It’s crazy, my grandfather just passed, that shit fucked my head up. But Yams, he wouldn’t want nobody to feel sorry for him. He’d want niggas to live it up for him. Throw a party for him or something like that. Smile for him”
According to HNHH, Ant tried to dispel rumors on Yams reportedly passing due to an overdose, he stated:
“I just want to clear it up for real, for real. It ain’t no overdose. People stop saying overdose, cuz that’s not what it is. People keep talking about he overdosed off Xanax or whatever and lean…no. That’s not what happened,”
A while ago, Yams went on record about doing drugs, “That lean sh** corny now i apologize for even glorifying that bullsh** its embarrassing it destroyed too many lives,” he wrote on Twitter in July. “Its disrespectful to the families who lost loved ones to that demon for us to be flaunting that addiction rip pimp c.” [BET]
