The movie “American Sniper”, based off a real-life NAVY SEAL by the name of Chris Kyle, won big this weekend. Not only did the film directed by Clint Eastwood live up to its box office expectations, but it also grabed a box office record.
The film has earned Bradley Cooper, who plays Chris Kyle in the story, a Best Actor nomination alongside nomination in the categories of Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay at the Academy Awards. Now the film owns the January box office record previously held by Kevin Hart and Ice Cube’s “Ride Along” film which brought in $41 million back in its January 2014 opening weekend. “American Sniper” shot that record clean out of the sky bringing in a hot $90 million its opening weekend.
This year Kevin Hart takes a backseat at #2 bringing in $21 million with “The Wedding Ringer”. “Paddington” takes the #3 spot with $19.3 million, while “Taken 3” grabs the #4 spot with $14 million. “Selma” rounds off the top 5 bringing in $8 million on MLK weekend.
Chris Kyle’s story was a best-selling autobiography book back in 2012 so it is only right that the story racks up in the box office as well. You can go see the Oscar-nominated film at a theater near you right now.
