Reflecting on the famous line from, For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf, written by Ntozake Shange, “I found God in myself and I loved her, I loved her fiercely”, as an actor, inspirational speaker, and mother, “You must love yourself completely to love others. We go through life being so critical of ourselves and we forget to cherish the quiet times, the guided times.” Angela Robinson of Tyler Perry’s The Have and Have Nots reminds us to remember God lives in us, God is everything! This brings us to the topic of whether a role honors your calling or is our obligation to minister in the space provided. As an actor, Angela Robinson is grateful for the doors that acting has opened. The opportunities have helped her pursue her calling as a speaker, mentor, and to feed-hungry artist. She feels it is not about the role it is about what you do with the opportunity and space.
Angela Robinson says, “Take the time to pray and ask God why you are in the position you are in. We have to understand alignment and work through purpose and service.”
Can service transcend a global pandemic? Angela Robinson was able to support her community and friends through COVID by creating Artist Talk. She reflects on a time when the world was on lockdown people were suffering, friends, family, and fans wanted to check on each other. Artist Talk was revolutionary in developing the healing process for artists such as Broadway stars, Tony winners as well as viewers through social media. Angela Robinson affirmed her belief that art changes, heal, and comforts. “Loving yourself enables one to love others. We all need to be motivated and validated no matter our dream!” She believes if God brought you to it, go all the way for God is the ultimate creator.
Growing up an English teacher’s daughter, who was head of the Drama Department, she fell in love with watching her mother direct musicals, which is where her passion for acting originated. Her parents continued to support her love for theater. Her favorite musical is “Dream Girls”. In alignment with her passion for playing the role of Deena Jones, she got a chance to live a dream. Not only did she play the role of an actress she truly admired but she also got to meet Sheryl Ralph.
Needless to say in her words “ The real person outshined the persona”, gracious, giving, and loving, “Hollywood got it right” when Sheryl Ralph was awarded her Emmy.
Angela Robinson is living happily ever after. Her husband Scott Whitehurst proposed to her, on her opening night of Dream Girls, a true Broadway moment. Both of them had great parents growing up which is why they one day wanted to be parents. Being an instrumental part of their niece’s and nephew’s lives showed the couple it was not about genetics but about passing down values and love. They were reminded of God’s love when they adopted their son Robbie. “God’s grace meant we did not have to earn him or hope for him but that perfect timing brought him home. A reminder to say self, did I thank God today?” Angela Robinson feels blessed to have a great career, an amazing son, and the best husband ever!
Rather it is seeing Robbie enjoying Paw Patrol or him jamming to Beyonce’s Break My Soul, she loves to watch the joy art brings to him, which inspires her. She sees how important what she does is and hopes people are changed, healed, or comforted through her work. She thanks her village, comprised of her dedicated babysitter, aunts, uncles, Godparents, great friends, and her spouse. Being a kid at heart and the places and opportunities her parents afforded her as a child, emphasize how important her role as a mother is. She feels fortunate to experience things again or what feels like the first time with Robbie. Becoming a mother later in life has made her more conscious of time. She shared a reflective moment of sitting in the pew at her niece’s wedding crying like where did the time go, which has made her adopt a no-time-wasted approach to life. “No time for drama because time will fly!” She does not want to look up one day and wonder when did her son grow up. Angela Robinson wants to be actively present in each moment. Whether it is a dance party, jumping on the beds, or exploring LEGOLAND she is loving life. Cheers to living in the overflow!
