Batgirl To Be DC’s Next Female Superhero Movie!

The DC Cinematic Universe is rapidly expanding! It jump-started with Man of Steel and now includes Batman vs. Superman, Suicide Squad; the Wonder Woman solo film debuts next month, Justice League is set for this fall, and Flash, Aquaman, Batman, Shazam, and The Green Lantern Corps all have films set to be released over the next few years. Now it looks like we can add Batgirl to the roster of superheroes getting their own solo films!

According to Joss Whedon, the director/constructor of The DC Cinematic Universe a Barbara Gordon/Batgirl solo film is in the works and she will be the next female superhero movie to be released!

Writer/director Joss Whedon’s Batgirl should be the next DC female superhero movie to hit theaters following director Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, according to a key architect of the larger DC Extended Universe. This information was brought to light over the course of the red carpet premiere event for Jenkins’ DCEU tentpole in Shanghai, ahead of the movie’s debut in Chinese theaters on June 2nd (e.g. the same day that it bows in North America).

Reports of Whedon working on a DCEU solo film for the Batgirl/Barbara Gordon character only emerged back in March of this year, though there had been reports about the character joining the DCEU via a Birds of Prey ensemble movie, prior to the announcement concerning Whedon’s project. The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron filmmaker isn’t wasting any time moving forward with his next comic book film adaptation either, based on the latest comments from DCEU producer Deborah Snyder.

As confirmed by multiple sources at the Wonder Woman Chinese red carpet event on Twitter (including, this second source), Deborah Snyder said Whedon’s Batgirl should reach theaters before the potential Wonder Woman sequel. While a 2018 theatrical release date sounds like a stretch at this stage, this suggests that 2019 is a real possibility for when Batgirl could hit theaters. Currently, the only DCEU movie officially scheduled to arrive that year is Shazam.

This is awesome news! Batgirl is definitely an icon and one of the most popular superheroes on the planet and she has been a part of the Batman mythos for over forty years. It is definitely time we see her get her own spotlight! There is no casting news for the film, but we did hear a horrible rumor that Miley Cyrus was trying on the Batgirl costume…What do you guys think of a Batgirl solo film? Will you be watching? Sound off below!

Hey Mikey!

WHO AM I? That’s probably what you’re thinking? It’s simple I’m this generation’s “Dear Abby!” I was raised in the Fourth Ward of Atlanta, educated in the School of Hard Knocks, and rescued by the concrete and steel of New York City. Life at best will always be bittersweet. The sooner you accept that, the better off you’ll be. I’d prefer to be on your sweeter side. Everyone needs a listening ear, extra shoulder, and open arms when life gets rough. I’m your new best friend, where it all goes south remember I’m a mouse click or tweet away. Hang in there kids, you’re gonna love kickin’ it with me!!! -Michael Jonvier
