Last night Kontrol had the pleasure to attending the viewing of BET’s “Being Mary Jane” starring Gabrielle Union. The viewing was held at The Buckhead Bottle Bar ad hosted by Black Girls Radio personality Stacii Jae, Nicole Garner, Mattieologie and Oh! Nikka.
Put together by the producers behind The Game and Jumping the Broom, Being Mary Jane revolves around Union as a successful TV anchor who is weighed down by her not-so-fulfilling personal life. Along with the end of her latest romance — which fizzles after she discovers that the man she’s been hooking up with is actually married — Mary finds herself constantly burdened with family responsibilities, including an ailing mother, a perpetually broke brother, and a niece who keeps popping out babies. Through it all, Jane just wants some companionship. The twist? She realizes it may not be a man she needs, but instead a baby.
Although the series doesn’t actually air until the new year, there were some heavy hitting topics. To me the running underline theme is, can a good girl have it all? MJ has a great career but yet yearns for a healthy relationship and a baby. Unlike the people in her family, she’s done the right things to get to were she is but the “stuff” isn’t enough. BMJ was very relatable and at some point in a woman’s life she has gone through what was shown last night.
“She’s human. That’s what I wanted to show, (that) this woman is a person that we all can relate to,” says Mara Brock Akil
How do you think Mara Brock Akil did with this show? If you missed it, you can watch below.
P.S. Gabrielle played the hail out of this character!
