Kontrol Magazine recently attended BET’s “Rap-It-Up: The Collegiate Campaign & Concert Experience.” The event was hosted on Clark Atlanta University campus and students from all over attended. J. Couture Productions and LIVE Society Event Management in conjunction with CAU’s Campus Activities Board and the Student Government Association is hosted the campaign. The campaign consisted of three testing days in the Atlanta University Center (Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, and Spelman). The testing days were scheduled for April 17th-19th for the students. The schools’ health centers partnered up with local clinics to allow a full day of free testing. Every student that was tested received a wristband, which served as a ticket into the concert. The campaign ended with a concert to reward the students for knowing their status.
AUC students were able to get down to the sounds of Sammie, Tex James, Mykko Montana, Hamilton Park, Mishon, Jade Alston, and Joe Fn Cool. The concert was emceed by Hot 107.9’s very own Mz. Shyneka. Before the concert we were able to sit down with some of the performing artists and entertainers who were there to support the cause. It was great hearing the artists encourage the students to get tested and know their status. The highlight of the press conference was talking to Kaine of the Ying Yang Twins. He had everyone in the room entertained and like everyone else he explained the importance of safe sex. Eventually when it was time for the concert it was exciting seeing all the students who went out and got tested; the entire room was packed. The artists were able to keep the crowd entertained and applauded them for participating in such a great event.
It is extremely important for everyone to practice safe sex and get tested. Events such as these are a great way to get the message out, but not everyone will be able to be bribed with a chance of a concert for doing the responsible thing.
