In celebration of the series premiere of NBC’s TAKEN, cast members Brooklyn Sudano and Gaius Charles hosted a press dinner at W Atlanta – Midtown on Thursday, February 2nd.

Taken is an upcoming American television series based on the Taken trilogy. The series acts as a prequel to the first film. Clive Standen stars as a younger version of Bryan Mills, the character played by Liam Neeson in the trilogy.

bothSudano plays Asha, an attractive, well-educated young student from an upper middle class family who is furthering her education when she first meets Bryan (Standen).

One of the things that drives her [Asha], is that she’s a truth seeker,” said Sudano. “She’s an environmental lawyer by trade so she likes the details and wants to understand. Sometimes that can get you in trouble.

For those who are fans of the trilogy, know that Mills develops a certain set of skills that is essential to him rescuing his loved ones that end it up taken. But what many don’t know is his journey to achieving those skills came from a loss that both he and Asha still suffer from. Sudano’s familiarity with mourning helped capture the authenticity in her role.

Asha is very close to who I am. She’s experiencing this grief very early on and in the last few years I have had to deal with some of that so I immediately connected to this character on a deeper level.

Charles plays John, a member of Bryan’s OPCON (Operational Control) team, an elite team of operatives who take care of America’s national security emergencies on the ground.

John is a natural born leader. He’s smart and strong,” said Charles. “One of the elements that John brings is discipline to the team. John is three dimensional. He’s not a stereotypical black character. He’s a man of faith, a man of his community, and he deals with issues such as his brother and his PTSD.

Taken is an action pack thriller filled with stunts that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats and with so much diversity within the cast, everyone watching can connect with a character onscreen.

Over the course of the first season, you’re getting to know all of these characters and when people watch, they’ll find someone to identify with and grab on to, Sudano stated.

With the frequency of executive orders and the high rise tension concerning the protection of Americans and their rights, TAKEN attacks those complex issues head on. Instead of focusing on the problem or even the solution, the series highlights the relationships and the people directly affected.

One thing that separates our show from others on the network is that we have nuance characters. Our story deals with national security issues, but we focus on the relationships as oppose to any partisan stance,” said Charles. “So whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, or Independent, you’re going to love our show.

Sudano adds that many of the topics that arise within the series poses questions for viewers to reflect and have open dialogue about what they would do in the event that these scenarios happened to them.

Our themes are universal. What would you do for family? Are you fighting for justice or revenge? You don’t always know who’s good or bad. Sometimes the good guys make bad choices and that’s relatable. That’s human.

Be sure to catch the season premiere of NBC’s TAKEN on Monday, February 27th at 10 PM.

Sudano is the daughter of super star “Disco Queen” Grammy Award winning singer Donna Summer and songwriter Bruce Sudano. She’s best known for playing her role on the NBC sitcom My Wife And Kids. Gaius Charles is best known for his roles in NBC’s Friday Night Lights and ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.
