Imagine arriving at a Caribbean resort where the weather is warm, colors are vibrant and skin is showing as bra tops, skirts, swimwear and men’s designs are shown on the runway. On Friday evening, at Sandovan Lounge in N.W. D.C., many designers and accessory artists came together to show their pieces for the first annual Met Gala Meets Runway 2015.
The event’s ambiance felt very Caribbean as you saw palm trees while sampling the food and cocktails in a very warm climate controlled space.
Highlights of fashion were Mr. Rodney’s collection entitled The Outsiders Inc. The designs were mostly t-shirts manipulated and cut into long dresses and shirts while giving dark colors with contrasts of black and white with an urban editorial twist. He has a distinct logo that sits atop the chest area for his clothing. He can be found at revolt1966.tumblr.com.
After a break from The Outsider’s Inc., Riley Knox, D.C.’s own Beyonce, upgraded and demanded our attention with her identical figure, look and stage presence similar to Queen B.
Original Crackage by Wes Wood was up next. Woods is clearly motivated by prints, colors and lines with perpendicular structure to give shape to men and women’s clothing. It almost takes you to a Ninja /Anime or comic con frame of reference with his collection. He can be found at originalcrackage.com.
Also to note Jewelry For You Accessories provided the complete looks for most of the designers. The way the accessories hit the light towards the end of the runway was very interesting. The shapes reminded me of winter snowflakes.
Finally for the grand finale there was the Milano Kollection from fashion blogger/designer, Milano. I loved the fact that he had flirty glam lace hats with his pieces while showing models with bras, jackets and wrap skirts. Colors were vibrant with pink, green and many others. There was even time for a bikini showcase in which one and two pieces were shown against the perfect backdrop of black, dark brown, beige and white skin tones. He can be reached at the Milanokollection.com.
