The world is a vast place with an array of people, but we all have one thing in common: we’re human. Where often times many like to focus on the differences and what makes us unique, the ongoing similarity is that we all are human beings trying to live the best life we can. With that being said, there should not be much of a segregation in the way certain offenses are treated, but time and history has always shown (and continues to show) otherwise.
One of the most obvious differences is the double-standard between celebrities (and wealthy) people versus everyone else. Time and time again, we have witnessed the slap on the wrists or the selective amnesia that society often has toward the rich and famous, and one word simply comes to mind: unfair.
Now, if you are sitting there attempting to remember when this has happened, a great recent example would be the R. Kelly interview with HuffPost Live. Initially the interview was going well, however, the minute the host began to inquire about the confusion felt by fans who struggle with supporting Kelly’s music due to his controversial sexual abuse allegation history, he became irrational and eventually discontinued the interview. Yes, R. Kelly may have dealt with some negative repercussions due to those allegations, but no one can deny that in some ways, he has continued to flourish and be successful despite those horrid allegations.
A lot can be said as to why this could be, but one must ask, “is it because he is a celebrity?” What are your thoughts? Do you think celebrities get away with more than the average person? Comment below!
