Y’all remember that Nivea song “Don’t Mess With My Man?” There’s a line that goes “Don’t mess with my man, I’ma be the one to bring it to ya…”
Well Charles Barkley, looks like Gabrielle Union “don’t play that” when it comes to husband and Miami Heat shooting guard Dwayne Wade.
Quick recap: Wade made headlines this week after being fined by the NBA $15,000 dollars after he reportedly had to check a few fans who got real slick in the mouth about the “Being Mary Jane” actress.
Wade wants the NBA to protect the players better because at the end of the day – he too has a family that he doesn’t want subjected to disrespect from fans.
Now here’s how Union and Barkley threw a few jabs…
Whether you love him or hate him, Barkley’s job as an analyst includes being asked questions and soliciting his opinions. However, that doesn’t mean he’s always “right” either.
Last night on TNT’s “Inside the NBA” post-game show, Barkley said that Wade didn’t deserve a spot on the All-Star team (Feb. 15 in NYC).
Barkley added that Wade didn’t have an “all-star year” which apparently rubbed Union the wrong way:
“Dwyane’s great, [he’s] a Hall of Famer, but he didn’t deserve to make the All-Star team. Dwyane Wade is not having an all-star year”.
Now keep this in mind – Wade joins Chris Bosh for round five of being selected for the All-Star team which is the longest streak for a pair of teammates. Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal previously held the record from 1999-2004. Not bad at all.
Union took to Twitter to air out a really interesting comparison. She compared herself to multiple Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep by poking fun at the fact she has never been nominated for the prestigious honor.
She tweeted:
“Forgive Charles. .. Kenny Smith is a 2x champion & his opinion is most sound. It’s like me talkin bout Meryl Streep but I ain’t won nuthin.”
Her tweet seemed to be directed and maybe a lil’ shady towards Barkley’s own on-the-court resume. The retired power forward has never won any NBA championships unlike his co-host Kenny Smith (won two with the Houston Rockets). Not to mention that Wade helped lead the Heat to two championships back in 2006 and 2012.
From a viewer’s standpoint, Barkley is known to ruffle feathers with his volunteered words however; he only gave his opinion. Also, Union’s defense was nothing short of a “good comeback” because she knew how to cover her basis while making fun of her “non-wins” as an actress.
On the bright side, she did get nominated for an NACCP Image Award for her role as the feisty Mary Jane in BET’s hit drama.
Ohhhh but not even that could stop Barkley from puttin’ those retaliatory paws on Union.
He took aim at the “pretty” actress to let Union know, “Baby, now you know you ain’t no Meryl, Angela or Viola” type response:
“Well listen, first of all never mention you and Meryl Streep in the same sentence again. Meryl Streep would never be on ‘Snakes On A Plane’ or ‘Madea’.”
Once Smith called Barkley out for his response, he reminded viewers that he’s not one to “turn the other cheek”:
“Well she could have been. I’ve seen her act, she could have been on ‘Snakes On A Plane’ or ‘Madea’. She’s taking shots at me. She’s pretty, she’s very pretty. I’m not one of them people who’s going to turn the other cheek. You say something bad about me, I’m going to say something about you.”
Peep it below:
Barkley’s “right” in the sense of what he gets paid to do and that’s understandable however, not every jab needs a response right?
What do you think of Barkley and Union’s choice of words?
