Chris Kelly: Live & Die for Hip Hop Black Out Gala

By: Sebastien “@TheGayBestie” Gaudin

In the evening of September 6, 2014, a group of loved ones including celebrities, family, and friends of Chris Kelly from Kris Kross paid homage to late rapper. The Gala itself was classic merged with an urban hip-hop touch surrounding the atmosphere. The essence of Chris Kelly was present for each person to embrace. Presenter and first cousin to the late rapper, Leigh Wise, constructed the affair for all attendees. Held at the Woodruff Art Center decked dripping with the best of the best for this event brought tears to his mother’s eyes.

The décor within itself was breathtaking and to amazed. The amount of love and appreciation was evident from wall to wall. Amongst the crowd stood familiar faces such as; Ed Lover, Rasheeda and Kurt, Kim Porter, Sheree Whitfield, Reginae Carter, Toya Wright, Tiny Harris, Eboni Electra. As each one took the stage to give their words of peace for the life gone too soon Ed Lover stood out in particular. He reminisced how he use to be on tour with the young group back in the early 90’s and literally saw Chris grow up into a man. Later he touch on the importance of live and cherishing each moment not fully knowing when this life will end, but to respect one another in the journey. The words he spoke weren’t astonishing, but phenomenal to hear from a living legend.

As the night continued the Eboni Electra proceeded as the mistress of ceremonies and assisted wit the execution of the affair. Wise then stepped to the stage and shared stories alongside a running video displaying the life of Chris. In his honor it was later announced that all proceeds from the evening will go to a music scholarship for students at the Atlanta Institute of Music and Media. The school stands as Kelly’s alma mater.
