There can only be one. This year’s inaugural College Football Playoff National Championship Game is between the Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Ducks were not supposed to be able to hang with Florida State’s superior athletes but after hanging 59 points on the defending national champions, Oregon showed they are for real. The Oregon Ducks blitzed Florida State with their signature lighting quick offense and a surprising, fleet footed defense. This was the same narrative for the Buckeyes, especially after getting down early against Alabama. Ohio State stormed back and are now back in the championship game for the first time since 2007. The Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes were not expected to be here.
Oregon and Ohio State match up very well against each other. Last week, Oregon’s defense showed it can create havoc. It will be the X-factor heading into the national championship game. If the defense creates turnovers, it’s like fueling a Ferrari with nitro; the Ducks’ offense is already fast and furious. Ohio State’s offense is fueled by running back Ezekiel Elliott. Elliott put the nail in Alabama’s coffin last week with his 85-yard touchdown run and will need to deliver again this week. Cardale Jones is the latest quarterback to step in from Ohio’s State bottomless depth chart and if he continues his great play, Ohio State will have something to counter the Ducks’ Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota. The playoff system has been a runaway success and Monday’s championship game is shaping up to be an all-time great game.
