When Steve Harvey released his book entitled, Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man I thought it was rather interesting how he assumed that every woman was knowledgeable about being a lady. That brought me to the idea of women today in the world. You know exactly whom I am referring to, the lady you greet with the utmost respect, the woman you walk pass with a smile, and the bitch you curse out for cutting you off in traffic. We’ve all come across these women on a day-to-day basis, but which one are you?
Traditionally, a lady is pictured as prim and proper. She carries herself with grace, poise, and elegance. She may even be somewhat submissive to the male sex. Believe it or not after questioning a number of women between 22-30 many were reluctant in considering themselves as ladies. A year ago I witnessed a girlfriend of mine get engaged and it was like she instantly became a lady. I’m not sure if it was the huge rock on her finger that did it, but her entire aura changed. She stood a little taller, seemed even classier, and shined brighter than her diamond. Her growth is undeniable and she was respected without having to verbally demand it.
As for defining a woman independence and self-sufficiency ran like wildfire. She embodies power and strength, which transcends to a presence that can intimidate, but also captivate. A woman is assured with who she is and where she’s going. She has her own mind and sometimes the title of king sits above her head. Yes, I meant king. She has a voice and will be heard. This only leads to wondering when did bitch become the replacement in society?
The word bitch has got to be the second most controversial term next to the n-word. At least everyday we hear the word used in casual conversations from a man or a woman. We hear it not only in hip-hop, but also in all genres. The term is colorless and can be geared towards any sex although mainly towards women. The influence can either make a person feel empowered or belittled depending on the context. Beyoncé even uses it in songs such as “Ego” and “Bow Down”, but does that make it ok?
Personally, I think woman are at an interesting point in time. For example, now you all have become the competition to men around the world running countries and CEO’s of multi-billion dollar empires. You’re no longer expected to just cook the bacon, but bring it home too. The word itself is simply a distraction to where women are heading as a whole. Most importantly what do you answer to Lady, Woman, or Bitch?
