From the looks of things, Cruella de Vil is getting a much-needed update that dives into her backstory. With all of the live action productions happening, this move with Cruella while somewhat unexpected, makes sense to me. Set in 1970’s London, young Cruella has ambitions at becoming a world-renowned fashion designer and socialite. The only thing that appears to match her sense of style is her desire to make it to the top of the social food chain.
Cruella de Vil isn’t the most powerful female Disney villain (Maleficent), nor is she necessarily the most dramatic (Captain Hook), but what Ms. de Vil has is something far more tangible and relatable than the other Disney villains–relatability.
Cruella de Vil is a dark yet comical mix of wealth, hunger, ambition, fashion, alcohol and brash badassery coupled with a dash of unmanaged mental illness. However good, bad or indifferent you are to this, keep in mind that Cruella has had other interpretations in the past. I’m interested in seeing her character done with a little more edge. Is it just me or did Emma Stone as Cruella give me a little Harley Quinn tease? Played by Oscar winning actress Emma Stone the film Cruella details the years leading to her transition into the iconic villainess that we’re so familiar with. It would appear that Ms. Cruella de Vil wasn’t always so devilish. The film Cruella is set to be released on 5-28-21. That’s not far off from now, and I’m too excited to see it.
