For those of the 2.6 million viewers who watched the movie The Breaks last year can rejoice as now it returns as an eight-episode series to VH1.
I had the opportunity to interview Antoine Harris, who plays “Ahm” a street pharmacists with lyrical skills who’s biggest enemy may be himself. A project baby from the Fort Greene neighborhood of Brooklyn New York. Fort Greene is a once sought after community which faced hard times after production slowed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard which employed some 71,000 workers. It’s prestige took another blow with the dismantling of the Myrtle Avenue elevated train in 1969 that offered transportation for neighboring borough Manhattan commuters which forced more residents to move out of the area. From the 60-80’s Fort Green was plagued with citywide poverty crime and the crack epidemic. Since the 1940’s new construction hasn’t been built resulting in dilapidated homes with poor residents which in modern times are known as projects. Having a lack of positive roles models and absence of his father Ahm is the quintessential product of his environment.
Preparing for the role of Ahm, Antoine drew inspiration from many avenues such as watching movies and documentaries as well as associates he knew that had that street lifestyle. However, the rapper aspect came second nature as Antoine describes himself as a “rap head”, he made the character come to life in deciding what traits a dope rapper should possess.
Playing a character in the early 90’s era came with a jog down memory lane when rap was authentic and becoming mainstream for everyone. Antoine recalls a time when he and a friend recorded a video on a huge music box with a video screen on the opposite side. They performed the “Humpty Dance” from Digital Underground.
“It was very easy to go back to time’s like that when music was kinda the structure for your days”
Similarities between Antoine and Ahm are that they both know who they are as a person, their ambitious and dreamers. As a driven person in Antoine’s past time he spends his time not doing too much relaxing but as he say’s “sharpening his sword”. He spends time writing poetry, he’s a songwriter and his hobbies include still trying to play his guitar, drawing, reading, traveling, working out including martial arts, going to the shooting range and watching good films.
Coming up Antoine Harris will be shooting season 3 of HBO’S Ballers and as of right now catch him as “Ahm” on The Breaks which airs Monday, February 20th at 9 pm on VH1.
