The annual Purge is back, and set ten years in the future–The Purge 2: Anarchy! This time around the action moves outside to the streets, where it seems like any and everything is happening. There are hunters with dogs, violent bike gangs kidnapping and killing anyone on the streets, burning buses, and even crazed rich people hiring and paying people to be killed. This inevitable sequel really pushes the envelope by expanding the cast. Four strangers caught on the streets in the midst of the madness are led by local police sergeant, Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo), hoping to survive the night. Leo, unlike, his wards is actually participating in The Purge for his own mysterious reasons. He is nothing short an anti-hero, eerily reminiscent of Marvel Comics, Frank Castle, also known as “The Punisher.” Interestingly, not everyone is a fan of The Purge, a faction, led by Carmelo is determined to take down the New Founding Fathers of America (NFFA) and end The Purge. It is literally war!
Besides this film being superior to its predecessor, it truly his close to home. The current fears surrounding the ever widening gap between the wealthy and impoverished in the United States are violently answered in this film. It is an ugly mirror of real life issues of zealotry, poverty, inequality, and violence. Can you truly imagine the innocent dying at the hands of another human being on such a wide scale? Or for that matter that such lawlessness is brought about by government sanctioned non-protection? Death and fear would rule the night. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the film is the NFFA’s involvement in The Purge. Sadly, it seems purges are going on all around us. Just this past Fourth of July holiday weekend 60 people were murdered and just last year “Stand Your Ground” “justly” took Trayvon Martin’s life…are we really to far off from a purge of our own? Catch “The Purge 2: Anarchy” in theaters everywhere!
