She’s Supergirl and she’s here to save the world! Finally a Kryptonian is back on television and we are not talking about Superman! His cousin, The Girl of Steel, Kara Zor-El now has her own television show. Starring Glee’s Melissa Benoist, the series takes place in fictional National City, where Kara works as an assistant to media mogul Cat Grant and lives in the shadow of her exceptional adoptive sister, Alex. She has spent years concealing her superhuman abilities, but when her sister’s life is in danger she has no choice but to reveal herself to the world. She immediately becomes a media sensation and decides to follow in her cousin’s footsteps and become the hero she was born to be.
I have to say a Supergirl series is refreshing. Am I the only person tired of so many Superman based series? What else is there to know about the Man of Steel really? Melissa Benoist really seems to have come into her own in this character, a far cry from Marley on Glee. You can already tell there will be lots of Easter Eggs in this show, The DEA (Department of Extranormal Affairs), a S.H.I.E.L.D.-like agency dedicating to neutralizing superhuman threats to the city. Side note, I do not ever recall any version of Jimmy Olsen being this hunky--Mehcad Brooks would make a better superhero than sidekick. Did know one think of Steel, another hero from the Superman Family?
Supergirl hails from the same creators of Arrow and Flash. Let’s hope they will not be chauvinistic and add her to their sprawling televised universe. Check out the trailer for the show below!
